July 12, 2009: Sweetness White Patato Together With Cabbage Soup

winter recipes. This fourth dimension it was Gluten Free Goddess.

Despite the multitude of ingredients, it's a pretty straightforward recipe, amongst everything happening inwards 1 large pot. And it's tasty - a hint of spice from the peppers together with cumin, the sweetness of the sugariness potatoes together with the crunchy chunks of cabbage together with onion for texture. Ours ended upwards to a greater extent than stew than soup, together with I actually enjoyed the leftovers served upwards on some rice.

Sweet spud together with cabbage soup

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons cumin
1 medium ruby onion, peeled together with diced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 large sugariness potato, peeled together with diced
1/2 caput royal cabbage, shredded
1 large xanthous capsicum, diced
2 chipotle peppers, amongst a one-half a teaspoon of their adobo sauce
400g tin white beans, rinsed together with drained
2 cups vegie stock
1/2 loving cup peanut butter
400mL tin kokosnoot milk
2 tablespoons vegan Worcestershire sauce
1 fresh ruby chilli, finely diced
2-3 tablespoons chopped coriander
1 lime, juiced
Sea tabular array salt together with dark pepper, to taste

Heat the crude inwards a large saucepan together with add together the cumin pulverisation to brand a spicy paste. Throw inwards the onion, garlic, sugariness potato, cabbage, capsicum together with chipotles together with stir, cooking until everything's softened (about 10 minutes).

Add inwards the beans, stock, peanut butter, kokosnoot milk, Worcestershire sauce, chilli together with coriander together with stir together.

Cover together with simmer the soup for almost one-half an hour, until everything is tender. Add inwards the lime juice together with seasonings correct earlier serving.

Garnish amongst leftover coriander if at that spot is any.

April 22, 2009: Soft Tofu Tacos

East Brunswick Club meal amongst them at the destination of final year, Caroline as well as T allow us inwards on 1 of their favourite ways to develop tofu - baked inwards cubes, seasoned amongst nutritional yeast flakes as well as chicken-style stock powder. Thinking it'd brand a swell taco filling, I couldn't resist adding a fiddling oregano to the 'fu. Michael sauteed a cheerful mix of sliced zucchini, capsicum as well as mushrooms, as well as then poured over a purée of pickled chipotles (adobo free) as well as balsamic vinegar. We rounded out the repast amongst fresh lettuce as well as hot, soft tortillas.

At get-go bite, this didn't blow me away... as well as then it actually crept upwardly on me equally I munched on. It doesn't compare to Trippy Taco's spicy grilled tofu, nor volition it tempt omnivores away from their chicken fajitas, but it surely has a charm all its own. Low effort, fresh-tasting as well as adaptable, I tin definitely run into this entering our weeknight repast rotation.

July 15-26, 2009: N Queensland

non-sausage rolls too Stephanie Alexander's white patato gratin, piece Jo showed us how Brussels sprouts are done (hint: alongside a lot of butter!). We followed it upwardly alongside mandarin maple pudding too cream whipped alongside vanilla too to a greater extent than maple syrup. Probably the greatest repast of the vacation was served on our final night, when Mike's uncle turned out an Indian feast. There was a dizzying array of dishes, alongside mushrooms too legumes, breadstuff too biryani, condiments too vegetables, including a gorgeous bowl of fried spiced potatoes.

North Queensland's no haute cuisine hotspot; soundless our watch volition in all likelihood sustain us through the wintertime that Melbourne's dishing out.

August 1, 2009: Roasted Vegetables Amongst Love Apple Tree Charmoula Together With Quinoa

winter giveaway. Dmargster originally flora this ane at FatFree Vegan Kitchen together with promised "You volition relish this or your coin back!"

While there's quite a few unlike elements vying for your palate's attention, he's correct that this is unproblematic to prepare: the chopped vegetables become into the oven amongst a scant but spicy dressing based on crushed tomatoes, piece the saffron, garlic together with currants only bring together the quinoa for its green stove simmer. Better yet, it's the form of affair you lot tin fix inwards mass together with pack upwardly for several lunches at work.

The lightness of the love apple tree chermoula coating that initially had me worried close impending blandness, but genuinely there's enough of season to hold upwardly had. Michael tends to prefer things saucy (make of that what you lot will), then if I brand this again, I powerfulness crusade padding out the chermoula amongst some love apple tree glue equally a compromise. I didn't genuinely similar the eggplant inwards this guise but the cauliflower, zucchini together with chickpeas were lovely.

Roasted vegetables amongst love apple tree charmoula together with quinoa

2 roma tomatoes
1/2 teaspoon 'chicken' stock powder

Halve the tomatoes together with house them cut-side-down on a tray. Grill them until the skins blacken together with delineate away from the flesh. Remove the skins together with mash the tomatoes inwards a small-scale bowl amongst a fork. Stir inwards the stock powder, cumin, paprika, pepper, ginger, marjoram, cayenne together with salt.

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Put the eggplant, cauliflower, zucchini together with capsicum into a large baking tray together with stir through the spiced love apple tree mush. Roast the vegetables for close thirty minutes, add together the chickpeas, together with roast for a farther xv minutes.

April 23, 2009: Cafe Najla

Update 31/12/2014: Cafe Najla is closed.

Cindy together with I had a appointment alongside this recommendation from FoodieFi. We turned upwards at almost 8:30 concerned that we'd girlfriend out on a table, but in that place was enough of infinite for us together with nosotros settled inwards to banking concern tally out our options.

The waitress recommended the vegetarian Mezza selection, including delights similar Bazrjan (tangy pomegranate bulgher salad alongside fresh tomato, Aleppo peoppers together with walnuts) together with Salatit Shwander (beetroot together with onion inwards pomegranate dressing), together with nosotros were both sorely tempted. But ane time I'd spotted the vegetarian laid card ($22.50) in that place was no turning back. I was unadventurous alongside my drinks alternative but Cindy splashed out on a sour cherry cordial alongside mineral H2O ($4.50), which tasted equally adept equally it sounds.

at the Northcote Social Club on Th even out Apr 23, 2009: Cafe NajlaFirst upwards inwards the laid card was a dip selection, including a wonderfully smoky baba ganoush, a garlicy hummus together with a sweetness beetroot based dip. The dips came alongside unopen to wellness vegie dippers but equally good alongside a big pile of bread, together with Cindy was already concerned that we'd over-ordered past times the fourth dimension we'd worked our means through these.

at the Northcote Social Club on Th even out Apr 23, 2009: Cafe Najla
Next upwards were our ii entree sized dishes. The Fatet last Zed (Damascan means chickpea ragout, served alongside rich yoghurt, tahini dressing, pistachio nuts together with crisp pita) was unopen to other inwards the long business of yoghurty chickpea things that we've had around town (and at home) - it was a delicious version of it, exclusively allow downwards slightly past times the sogginess of the 'crisp' pita.

at the Northcote Social Club on Th even out Apr 23, 2009: Cafe Najla
It was closely followed past times the Ful M'dammes (a warm broad edible bean together with Lycopersicon esculentum salad, served alongside lemon, garlic together with tahini dressing). The dressing was super-tangy together with well-suited to the tender beans - fifty-fifty the Lycopersicon esculentum worked inwards this dish. The major work nosotros had was our lack of something to soak upwards all the deliciousness - nosotros in all probability should stimulate got saved unopen to of our dipping bread.

at the Northcote Social Club on Th even out Apr 23, 2009: Cafe Najla
Our salad, Salatit Fattoush (Syrian salad alongside Cos lettuce, grapes together with strawberries, servied alongside sumac together with pomegranate dressing together with crispy pita) was the meal's highlight - the sweetness of the fruit together with the lemony seize alongside teeth of the sumac were an outstanding combination, together with this fourth dimension the crispy pita was overnice together with crispy. It's non something I'd always stimulate got ordered off the menu, but it actually shone.
at the Northcote Social Club on Th even out Apr 23, 2009: Cafe Najla
We were both actually struggling to uncovering room past times this point, then in that place was no disappointment that the laid dessert alternative was a minor plate of glutinous Turkish delight, served alongside mint tea.

at the Northcote Social Club on Th even out Apr 23, 2009: Cafe NajlaI've been turned off Turkish please past times Cadbury, but whenever I've had a serve of the proper stuff, I've actually enjoyed it. It helped to stimulate got the minty tea to accept the border of the sweetness a bit.

Nalja plow on a pretty adept vegetarian feast, together with stimulate got a broad selection of smaller offerings on their regular menu. With friendly staff, a cosy infinite together with a High St location, I was surprised that in that place weren't to a greater extent than people filling themselves alongside Middle-Eastern delights. Their loss I suppose.

August 2, 2009: Zippy Warm Tater Salad

chickpea burgers. Our favourite burger side is oven-baked spud 'chips' but amongst 4-6 eaters expected together with 8 burger patties prepped, the oven couldn't check my side-dish wish. My online recipe stash failed to inspire together with I pulled out a few selection recipe books - hither I constitute what I was afterwards nearly immediately! H5N1 'warm spud salad amongst greenish olive dressing' from vegie food, amongst all heating provided atop the stove.

Though it looked to locomote exactly what I wanted, I prepared myself for unopen to disappointment. Most of the photos inwards vegie food demo nutrient that's simply my style, nevertheless for every great recipe we've tried, there's been 1 amongst terrible timing or quantities.

Thankfully this 1 was bang on. It takes picayune to a greater extent than than the xv minutes the potatoes take away to boil - fourth dimension I had piece the burgers were baking. All the spuds take away together with thence is a quick toss through a zippy dressing of lemon together with olive oil, greenish olives, capers, parsley together with garlic. Served hot, it's everything I was afterwards inwards a bit replacement. Served at room temperature, I consider it'd brand a lovely choice to the criterion mayo-drowned picnic spud salad.

Zippy warm spud salad
(from vegie food)

1.5 kg pocket-size waxy potatoes
1/2 loving cup greenish olives, pitted together with chopped
2 teaspoons capers, chopped
3/4 loving cup parsley, chopped

Boil the potatoes for xv minutes or until simply tender (test them amongst a knife).

While the potatoes are boiling, whisk together the remaining ingredients inwards a large bowl.

When the potatoes are done, drain together with cool them simply until you're able to get got them. Slice the potatoes into large chunks, together with thence toss them through the dressing.

Serve the salad warm or at room temperature.

April 24, 2009: Mojo's Weird Pizza

Umago has been our regular choice but it has only intermittently satisfied. So when I flora out that nosotros were inward the delivery expanse of the Clifton Hill branch of Mojo's Weird Pizza I was non bad to hand it a try.

For all their utter of weirdness (and to hold out fair, a banana as well as bacon pizza is pretty strange), the vego options aren't specially wacky, amongst options similar tomato, artichoke as well as rocket, roast vegie as well as bruschetta sounding delicious without likewise much craziness.

Cindy tried to dial upwards the weirdness every bit much every bit she could, ordering the 2 almost interesting sounding veg options. First up, the cheeseathon known every bit Kaas Kop - caramelised onion, blueish vein cheese, regular cheese, parmesan cheese as well as cream cheese. We only got a modest 1 of these, which was a proficient selection - the blueish vein as well as caramelised onion were a fantastic combination but the whole thing is only incredibly rich. You tin experience your arteries clogging.

ve had or then really fine pizzas inward Melbourne Apr 24, 2009: Mojo's Weird Pizza
Our minute selection was The Gringo (salsa base, corn chips, cheese, spanish onion, fresh tomato, jalapenos, cream cheese. topped amongst sour cream as well as guacamole), which is shooting for the same territory every bit Umago's Mexican pizza. I actually liked the stance of this pizza - specially the loads of jalapenos as well as slatherings of sauces, but the chip layer was a chip much for me. I could grip a smattering of corn chips on operate past times of a pizza, but this came amongst a layer of chips 2-3 deep correct across it. Apparently the chip score is pretty variable, then I haven't given upwards promise on this 1 entirely.

ve had or then really fine pizzas inward Melbourne Apr 24, 2009: Mojo's Weird Pizza
Cindy couldn't resist ordering a garlic staff of life ($5), which wasn't anything specially special (beyond the fact that it was garlic staff of life of course).

And, inward a nod of the caput towards healthfulness, nosotros also ordered Mojo's ain garden salad, which came amongst its ain trivial subway of Heinz dressing as well as a dense layer of fetta as well as olives across the top. It was okay, but a long means from existence salubrious I suspect.

August 2, 2009: A Healthier Peanut Butter Cookie

peanut butter cookies. But this recipe, from 101 Cookbooks, distinguishes itself every bit a healthier, veganer version - something I'm happy to pack for my mid-afternoon munchies at work. H5N1 fiddling olive stone oil augments the peanut butter for the fattiness, sweetness comes from maple syrup, together with the flour is 100% wholemeal.

If naught else, these cookies direct hold demonstrated how my eating preferences direct hold influenced Michael over the years; when I origin met him he had minimal involvement inward dessert. Yet on Mon nighttime afterward dinner it was he who rummaged through the kitchen seeking something sweet, ultimately lamenting that these cookies tasted "too healthy". I don't know most that, but they're non quite every bit sweetness every bit your typical American-style cookie (which I don't intend is anything to locomote ashamed of) together with the wholemeal flour for sure adds or together with thence weight together with chew to them (which I desire when mild mid-afternoon hunger strikes).

The dough comes together easily yesteryear mitt together with is a fiddling glutinous (though the 5 infinitesimal residual allows it to dry out out a little). It expands quite a flake inward the oven together with thence spoon modest together with locomote out enough of infinite on the tray! These cookies are moist together with only a fiddling crisp on the outside. They're real nearly fantastic. The i affair that doesn't quite sit down correct alongside me is the run of maple syrup to sweeten the peanut butter - they mellow together with intermingle over a few days, but it's non the same every bit the peanut butter-brown saccharide partnership I'm accustomed to together with volition belike revert to. Regardless, it's a excellent recipe together with i that Heidi has taken a lot of time, patience together with flour to perfect - whatever improvements volition locomote incremental together with serve exclusively my real specific, personal peanut butter cookie expectations.

A healthier peanut butter cookie
(a recipe from 101 Cookbooks)

2 cups wholemeal flour
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 loving cup crunchy peanut butter
1 loving cup maple syrup
1/3 loving cup olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 180°C together with job a baking tray or 2 alongside paper.

In a smallish bowl, stir together the flour, bicarb soda together with salt. In a larger bowl, stir together the remaining ingredients until good combined. Stir the flour mixture into the peanut butter mixture until only combined together with permit the dough to residual for 5 minutes.

Drop spoonfuls of the dough onto the baking trays, leaving enough of infinite for expansion betwixt them. Bake for most 10 minutes, keeping a closed pump on them from the 8 infinitesimal grade onwards. Allow the cookies to cool on the tray for 5 minutes earlier transferring them to a rack.

April 25, 2009: Hot Chocolate

Koko Black's to a greater extent than sophisticated version since moving to Melbourne, but mostly I prefer my chocolate served inwards its enterprise state.

That is, until Tracy as well as Lee rewarded our cat-sitting with a canister of Monsieur Truffe's hot chocolate mix. These are dark chocolate buds of 70% cocoa solids, to last melted inwards just-boiled milk as well as sweetened if y'all must. Noticing that they're vegan, I packed them as well as a litre of oat milk for dessert to follow a weeknight dinner at Lisa's house. I stretched my resources with to a greater extent than people than the instructions recommended but I don't mean value anyone felt cheated - this is i rich, cocoa-packed brew. I've since enjoyed using the same method with other scraps of dark chocolate (if chocolate tin e'er last called 'scraps'), as well as convey persisted with oat milk inwards preference to dairy or soy.

The recipe below makes but i of my slightly smaller portions. I mean value I'll get-go trialling a pinch or 2 of solid soil spice (ginger, cardamom, cinnamon or chilli!) to proceed things interesting.

Hot chocolate
40g dark chocolate - inwards buds, grated, or pulverised inwards a nutrient processor
200mL milk (not necessarily dairy)
sugar, to sense of savor (my sense of savor ordinarily existence none!)
a pinch or 2 of solid soil spice (optional)

Bring the milk but to the boil inwards a minor saucepan, as well as thence trim down the rut to low-medium. Add the chocolate, saccharide as well as spice, stirring until the chocolate is completely melted. (Scrape the bottom of the saucepan equally y'all stir, that's where it likes to lurk!) Pour the hot chocolate into a mug as well as sip, like shooting fish in a barrel as well as appreciatively.

August 3, 2009: Gertrude Street Grub - Charcoal Lane

The quondam Aboriginal Health Service on Gertrude Street has been something of a landmark, despite sitting empty for to a greater extent than than a decade. The giant red, yellowish in addition to dark facade was a reminder of pre-gentrification Gertrude Street in addition to a symbol of the unopen connector Indigenous Victorians felt to the area. So at that spot was a flake of community consternation when Mission Commonwealth of Australia was given a 10 twelvemonth lease on the edifice belatedly concluding year. While it remains problematic that some local Indigenous groups were unhappy amongst how this crucial business office of their local heritage was passed on to a non-Indigenous group, the basic premise of Mission Australia's newly opened restaurant, Charcoal Lane, is a positive one.

Taking some inspiration from Fifteen, Charcoal Lane has been gear upward to furnish a house for Indigenous immature people to have preparation inwards the hospitality industry, nether the supervision of some of Victoria's finest restauranteurs. It's a fine idea, in addition to hopefully 1 that pays off over the coming years. The restaurant, named subsequently the nearby lane where local Indigenous people congregated, produces slightly fancy Australian-inspired meals, amongst a preponderance of fish in addition to meat dishes. Vegetarians larn a few decent options, but are express to appetisers in addition to entrees.

The quondam Aboriginal Health Service on Gertrude Street has been something of a landmark August 3, 2009: Gertrude Street Grub - Charcoal Lane
I took payoff of the $35 two-course dejeuner offer, starting off amongst some spiced yam fritters served amongst a bush tomato plant chutney. The yams were slightly sweetness amongst a depth of flavor added past times some unidentified spices, in addition to were dunked liberally inwards the slightly smokey, tomato plant chutney. They were like inwards construction to a bhaji, in addition to I directly lowered the musical note past times eating these amongst my fingers - I'm certain I'd bring made an fifty-fifty bigger mess amongst cutlery.

The quondam Aboriginal Health Service on Gertrude Street has been something of a landmark August 3, 2009: Gertrude Street Grub - Charcoal LaneThe vegie principal on offering (an upsized entree) was a pumpkin gnocchi, amongst fried sage, macadamia nut butter in addition to saltbush. I'm oftentimes annoyed past times the fallback of meaty restaurants on gnocchi or risotto for their vegetarian offering, but this was a revelation - crispy piffling pillows of pumpkin gnocchi, surrounded past times a glorious combination of flavours. The fried sage in addition to the saltbush contributed a sort of fancy tabular array salt in addition to pepper combo, spell the chunks of macadamia in addition to the macadamia butter were rich in addition to smooth. I could bring eaten 2 bowls.

They also offering a dark rice risotto, which looks amazing (alas my photos gain not), but was patently a piffling on the bland side.

We had a really satisfying (and upmarket) repast at Charcoal Lane. The eating seat is alone opened upward during dejeuner until mid-August, when they volition extend their hours to dinner in addition to weekend breakfast. Similarly, they're yet going through the procedure of getting a liquor license. Regardless, it would endure good worth sneaking inwards at that spot for a quick dejeuner now, earlier give-and-take gets unopen to in addition to the house starts to mass out.

April 25, 2009: Cryptic Cookies

This is my outset endeavor at something from the sweeter side of Apr 25, 2009: Cryptic cookiesThis is my outset endeavor at something from the sweeter side of Veganomicon. For all their Plain Jane looks, I've dubbed these cryptic cookies for a argue - they convey a lot to a greater extent than going on than they allow on at outset glance. The initial hint for the non-scoffer is the curious aroma. The outset seize amongst teeth confirms it to hold upwardly rose water; together with so there's sourness earlier sweetness together with equally chewing continues, a golden roastedness together with hint of tabular array salt to circular out the flavour.

The rose water's backed upwardly amongst an all-star line-up of vanilla, lime, cardamom together with sesame seeds. These are truly supposed to hold upwardly decorated amongst chopped pistachios (hence their master name, pistachio-rosewater cookies) but designated shopper Michael lamented that at that topographic point wasn't a pistachio to hold upwardly had inwards Fitzroy, together with I took a risk on the sesame seeds inwards the pantry. I wasn't similar a shot convinced, all the same they snuck their agency into my favour over the course of report of a few cookies.

Isa together with Terry hope cookies "pretty equally a picture" together with I'm certain they'd hold upwardly a fiddling to a greater extent than eye-catching if studded amongst the recommended pistachios. However, my dough was far also runny to whorl into balls so they seemed doomed to this blobbly shape. I tin imagine, though, how lovely they'd expect if the dough was piped into thick due south shapes using a star-shaped nozzle. Warm from the oven, the cookies had the perfect repose of crisp outer together with chewy centre; in ane trial cool they were uniformly crunchy, a fine candidate for dunking inwards tea.

Cryptic cookies
(based on the pistachio-rose H2O cookies inwards Veganomicon, past times Isa Moskowitz & Terry Romero)

1 1/4 cups dark-brown sugar
1/2 loving cup canola oil
3 tablespoons oat milk

1 3/4 cups patently flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon reason cardamom
1/4 loving cup sesame seeds

Whisk together the sugar, oil, milk, rose water, vanilla, lime juice together with zest inwards a bowl. Whisk inwards the cornflour until the mixture is smooth. Thoroughly mix through the flour, baking powder, tabular array salt together with cardamom.

Drop large teaspoons of the dough onto the baking sheet, leaving enough of infinite betwixt cookies. Sprinkle the blobs amongst sesames seeds, together with so bake them for 10-13 minutes (mine needed no to a greater extent than than 10 minutes). Allow them to cool together with theater upwardly on the tray for five minutes earlier transferring them to a rack.

August 9, 2009: Vegetarian Cassoulet

Johanna's post nearly this cassoulet when she get-go published it, I didn't bookmark it at all.) Yet Johanna submitted it to our giveaway every bit 1 of her favourite wintertime warmers, together with I must acknowledge that she has a pretty good track record with recommendations. This proved to hold out no exception.

I tire chop-chop of the veges-in-tomato-sauce agency of vegetarian cooking, but this has a niggling to a greater extent than going for it. There's fennel, left to chocolate-brown alongside the onions together with garlic, together with there's a comforting mix of breadcrumbs, parmesan together with parsley allowed to crisp on acme earlier it's stirred through the casserole. Johanna made Federal Reserve annotation of ii other properties that are pop inwards this household: the flavours prepare over several days together with there's plenty for several meals. (Even the version below, which is in all likelihood two-thirds the master copy quantity.) Just what nosotros desire for lunchbox leftovers!

Vegetarian cassoulet
(based on a recipe at Green Gourmet Giraffe)

1 tablespoon oil
1 large onion
1 minor fennel bulb
iii cloves garlic
1 large carrot
1 stem celery
2 Lebanese eggplants (they're roughly the kind together with size of a zucchini)
200g mushrooms
2 tomatoes
iii tablespoons Lycopersicon esculentum paste
2 teaspoons mixed dried herbs (I used parsley, oregano together with sage)
1 bay leaf
1/4 loving cup white vino vinegar
1 loving cup stock
400g tin butter beans, drained together with rinsed
75g cherry lentils
iii tablespoons parsley
100g parmesan
100g breadstuff crumbs

Finely chop the onions together with fennel together with mince the garlic. Heat the stone oil inwards a large pot - if yous accept an oven-proof one, occupation that. Add the onions, fennel together with garlic together with laid upwardly them over depression heat, stirring often, until browned (about 20-30 minutes).

While that's cooking, give-up the ghost on chopping, getting the carrot, celery, eggplant, mushrooms together with Lycopersicon esculentum into overnice bite-sized chunks. When the onions are ready, add together all those veges to the pot, along with the Lycopersicon esculentum paste, mixed herbs, bay leaf, vinegar together with stock. Bring it all to the boil, together with therefore comprehend together with simmer it for 10-20 minutes. Drain together with rinse your beans, adding them together with the lentils to the pot to simmer for a farther 10 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Chop the parsley together with grate the parmesan.

Once all that simmering's done, it's fourth dimension to larn baking. If your pot's non oven-proof, transfer the mixture to a casserole dish that is. Scatter two-thirds of the parsley, parmesan together with breadcrumbs over the cassoulet, together with therefore bake it for nearly xx minutes. Use a wooden spoon to intermission the crust together with stir it into the cassoulet; sprinkle over the remaining parsley, parmesan together with breadcrumbs together with bake for a farther xx minutes.

28/02/2013: Based on Ed's tweet, it appears that Gigibaba is no more.

Both blogosphere traditional media been abuzz Grumpy's Green across the street subsequently Michael added his mention to the want list.

The bill of fare offers good over a dozen teeny tasting plates as well as almost a tertiary equally many primary dishes. It's worth noting that the bill of fare seems to alter regularly. On this night, none of the mains were vegetarian (save for the choban salata lingering lone at the terminate of the same bill of fare page), but almost one-half of the tasters are veg-friendly as well as I was happy to graze my agency through them. These saucers of nutrient are as well as therefore teeny, inwards fact, that Michael as well as I tried every vegetarian dish on the bill of fare except i (the tabular array salt cured dark olives, since y'all asked).

This is a hip as well as in-demand establishment; the lights are depression as well as the bulk of customers (including Michael as well as I) are seated at a bar, facing the jovial but bustling staff. It wasn't a dark for flash photography or desktop tripods! Moving on to the plain of written report of this photograph - Gigibaba offers corking bread. August 9, 2009: Nutella H2o Ice Cream

When Michael went away for operate for a few days August 9, 2009: Nutella H2O ice creamWhen Michael went away for operate for a few days, I also worked. Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 lot. My commons 7-8 lx minutes weekdays stretched to ix or fifty-fifty 10 hours, I spent much of Sat inward the part as well as fifty-fifty blew off a friend's birthday drinks to review an article on Sat night. I returned to the part on Lord's Day morning, but earlier immersing myself inward equations I made a plan. I would become dwelling early, sink into the couch as well as lookout adult man a doco (where the maths is then much to a greater extent than beautiful than mine) as well as gain something fabulous, but for me. It was fourth dimension to suspension out Clotilde's simple-yet-stunning nutella icecream recipe.

How simple, yous ask? Here it is, inward 12 words: whisk together equal weights nutella as well as evaporated milk; chill, churn as well as freeze. Sure, yous tin embelish it - become for a high-end nutella choice or, equally I did, add together about chopped hazelnuts for a fleck of compaction - but the nitty-gritty recipe is pretty exceptional but on its own. And but how stunning? Licking the drippings from the bowls as well as utensils was plenty to satisfy me that day, though I felt compelled to accept a niggling gustatory modality iv hours later, when the texture was probable to survive at its peak. It was similar something from a dream, amongst the rich fluffiness of a chocolate mousse - I was disappointed that my amount tummy precluded me from eating whatever more.

But, wonder of wonders, the texture was really nearly equally practiced to a greater extent than than 48 hours afterward when Michael joined me for dessert! While most homemade icecreams freeze difficult as well as dense, this ane is scoopable straightaway from the freezer. (I've tried non to muse also long or deeply virtually which of nutella's highly processed, nutrient-scarce ingredients has that effect.) Rich as well as sweet, it's also very, really slow to halt at ane scoop. Simple recipe, stunning results, built-in part command - is in that place anything that Clotilde's nutella icecream can't do?

October 18, 2009: The Couscous Experiment - Stage Iii

For the tertiary too concluding stage of the couscous experiment, I chose too adapted i of the recipes that was supplied alongside our promotional bundle of pearl couscous. Originally a "medley of mushroom too spinach alongside gourmet pearl couscous too bacon", I replaced the bacon alongside a vegetarian imitation, too the spinach alongside silverbeet.

In this recipe, the onions too mushrooms larn sauteed earlier the couscous too stock are added. Once the stock has been absorbed, inwards goes the spinach/silverbeet too unopen to grated parmesan, too on goes unopen to grilled (faux) bacon. Based on our previous trials, it was pretty clear to me that production #3, the moghrabieh, was non going to come upwardly out of this well. Given the risotto-like nature of the recipe I decided to supervene upon it alongside production #3a, arborio rice. Costing $2.49 for a 500g packet ($4.98/kg) at our local supermarket, it's at the cheaper too to a greater extent than accessible goal of the products.

Let's boot off alongside the recipe, should you lot want to endeavour it at home.

April 29-May 2, 2009: White Chocolate Brownies

made for me. Choosing a recipe also long to check on 1 page, she revealed the tantalising listing of ingredients for white chocolate brownies inwards April, leaving me hanging until May to truly run across the training method! This truly worked out good - I baked the brownies slow inwards Apr for a tea political party held on the outset weekend inwards May.

As yous tin run across from the photo, this brownie isn't without cocoa solids. In fact, there's almost one-half a kilo of three dissimilar kinds of chocolate inwards the smallish tray I baked. The batter, which contains to a greater extent than or less of this chocolate, serves every bit piffling to a greater extent than than a binder for the chocolate chunks. As a number this is 1 of the firmest as well as to the lowest degree fudgy brownies I've sampled. That didn't comport upon its popularity, though - the 24 pocket-size pieces that I cutting this into had completely disappeared earlier I left the party.

A quirk of the master recipe was the inclusion of 125g patently flour as well as 40g self-raising flour. I don't laissez passer on self-raising flour inwards my pantry since it tin live on substituted amongst a combination of patently flour as well as baking powder. By my scrawled estimations, this recipe is requesting 164g patently flour as well as simply a gram of baking pulverization (give or take, uh, a gram). I humoured my batter amongst that pinch of baking powder, but given that our favourite brownie recipe doesn't include whatever leavening, I suspect these tin safely live on baked without it.

White chocolate brownies

125g butter
150g milk chocolate
50g nighttime chocolate
1/2 loving cup castor sugar
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
165g patently flour
125g white chocolate, chopped
125g milk chocolate, chopped

Preheat over to 170°C. Grease as well as trouble a 20cm foursquare cake tin amongst paper.

In a medium-sized saucepan over depression heat, melt the butter, outset 150g milk chocolate as well as the nighttime chocolate. Remove the saucepan from the oestrus as well as allow it to cool for close 10 minutes.

Whisk the saccharide as well as eggs into the melted chocolate butter. Thoroughly stir through the flour, thence plication through the chopped chocolate. Pour the brownie batter into the cake tin, smoothing over the top. Bake for close thirty minutes, testing amongst a skewer.

August 5-8, 2009: Brisbane

A brief run trip to Brisbane gave me a corking chance to accept a quick run through the vego scene there. It's booming, with 2 novel veg-only tiffin places popping upwards inwards the CBD since I'd end visited. First up, VegeRama (1/300 Queen Street, weekday lunches only). It's basically a vegie hot box place, with a broad alternative of curries, stir-fries as well as other treats to select from. I couldn't teach past times the burger (which was vegan) - a marinated tofu pattie, with a satay/hummus sauce, grated carrot as well as beetroot, as well as other salady bits as well as pieces on a wholemeal bun ($8 ). It's pretty tasty, but maybe a footling pricey for what is actually a rattling uncomplicated sandwich. Still, the remaining options at VegeRama looked worthy of investigation, as well as it's fantastic to encounter a veg identify sitting inwards a nutrient courtroom alongside all the other horrors.

Trippytaco. The filling was a footling on the bland side and, spell the sauces were dainty enough, a flake of zing was missing. Perhaps I should stimulate got ordered something else - Sanitarium was overrun when I visited, with almost all the tables amount as well as a queue of takeaway customers snaking out the door. It's worth noting that the bill of fare doesn't supply whatever assistance for vegans, as well as fromKuan Yin (198 Wickham St, Fortitude Valley) is perhaps the best value mock-meat eating theater inwards Australia. For $10, I got this:

homemade version (I'd charge per unit of measurement them slightly inwards a higher identify La Panella), as well as the dagwood domestic dog was pretty corking besides (let's human face upwards it, I was merely excited to hold upwards eating a vegie dagwood dog). The markets themselves stimulate got changed since nosotros used to alive nearby - lots to a greater extent than stalls inwards seemingly less infinite = a rattling crowded morning.

Finally, it was fourth dimension for a take in to an erstwhile favourite: Govinda's (99 Elizabeth Street). It's Krishna food, but it's Krishna nutrient done good as well as done cheaply (between $6 as well as $10 all you lot tin eat).

A brief run trip to Brisbane gave me a corking chance to accept a quick run through the August 5-8, 2009: BrisbaneThrow inwards a run of 4 direct sunny days with temperatures inwards the mid-twenties, as well as it's plenty to brand you lot intend well-nigh moving back...

October 19, 2009: The Lomond Hotel

The Gem). This fourth dimension to a greater extent than or less nosotros all headed northward to The Lomond inwards East Brunswick.

The Lomond has been positively reviewed past times a duo of meat-eating bloggers, but one of them was of the slightly upmarket eating theater tucked away out the dorsum together with the other didn't sample anything meat-free. Our pub-club is less close tabular array cloths together with to a greater extent than close fried nutrient together with front-bars, together with therefore nosotros opted for the casual vibe past times the puddle tables. The bar carte is pretty veg-friendly, amongst 5 meals to direct from. We eschewed the stir-fried vegies amongst couscous together with harissa ($12) together with the fattoush salad amongst warm chickpeas ($14), instead opting for dishes that were seemingly vegan (I must acknowledge nosotros didn't banking corporation fit though).

I ordered the spicy chickpea, tater together with cashew hot pot amongst steamd rice ($15, run into above). This was warm together with filling, but non especially flavoursome - it felt similar something nosotros could throw together at domicile without also much bother together with was a niggling overpriced for what it was.

This fourth dimension to a greater extent than or less nosotros all headed northward to The Lomond inwards East Brunswick Oct 19, 2009: The Lomond HotelCindy's croquettes were appropriately deep-fried (which is what y'all larn to the pub for actually isn't it?), together with came amongst an ineresting kokosnoot sauce on the side. Again though, they were a niggling bland, together with therefore despite their textural excellence, Cindy was non especially impressed. It's worth noting that soul else at the tabular array ordered the twice-baked goats cheese souffle, together with it was deemed a cracking success, together with therefore mayhap nosotros merely ordered poorly.

The front-bar at the Lomond has a really laid-back vibe (especially when there's some dissever of lesbian puddle contest going on, equally in that place was on the Mon nosotros visited), which is apparently a long agency from the atmosphere inwards the restaurant. We had fun kicking dorsum casually to a greater extent than or less the tabular array but seemingly the nutrient isn't a high priority inwards the bar (even our non-veg friends were a fighting disappointed) together with therefore it mightiness survive worth braving the tablecloths if you're later on a meal.

new breakfast options popping upward roughly the place, it's been a long fourth dimension since nosotros made it upward to Brunswick to view our one-time favourite Ray. Not much has changed inwards the intervening months - same put back, slightly disorganised staff, same Middle-Eastern inspired breakfast carte du jour as well as the same divine coffee.

We both decided to stimulate something novel - Cindy went amongst the French toast amongst sweetness labna as well as maple syrup ($8 - run across above). The Turkish breadstuff makes a especially expert French toast, as well as the combination of labna as well as pistachios industrial plant nicely. It was in all likelihood a combat heavy on the maple syrup, as well as could accept used a combat of fruit to mix things upward a little. Still, at $8, this is an oustandingly expert value sweetness brekkie.

As much equally I dear the poached eggs at Ray, I decided to branch out as well as stimulate the Baharat baked beans amongst chilli, labna as well as toasted pide ($8.50).

Mike as well as Jo typically part each other's meals whenever they swallow out but negotiations became far to a greater extent than complex (albeit to a greater extent than polite) when they joined Michael as well as I for dinner at Enlightened Cuisine. October 20, 2009: Kentucky Fried Tofu

One of my guiltiest pleasures earlier going vegetarian was KFC Oct 20, 2009: Kentucky fried tofuOne of my guiltiest pleasures earlier going vegetarian was KFC. I even together with thus teach cravings for chicken fillet burgers that are completely out of proportion to the actual enjoyment I would derive from eating said burger. One of my guiltiest pleasures earlier going vegetarian was KFC Oct 20, 2009: Kentucky fried tofuSo naturally, when I saw this 'Kentucky means fried chicken' crumbing mix inward an Asian supermarket, I had to give it a go... on tofu. Even if this did gustation similar KFC (it doesn't), Colonel Sanders' undercover combination of 11 herbs together with spices would hardly accept been exposed - the ingredients listing inward its entirety reads "wheat flour, salt, spices, herbs, flavour enhancer".

And if this crumbing doesn't gustation similar KFC, it does at to the lowest degree gustation good. It's spicier than the Colonel's master copy recipe, together with I intend the dominant flavour is cumin. At solely a distich of dollars for a box (this volition coat plenty tofu to brand us 2 or 3 meals) it's a fun option to our park tofu preparations. However, amongst a large collection of dried herbs together with spices already on hand, I'd similar to showtime developing my ain undercover seasoned flour recipe rather than buying more.

To teach into the pseudo-KFC groove, nosotros accompanied the tofu amongst mashed tater together with gravy, together with popcorn cauliflower.

May 1-2, 2009: Ruby Velvet Cupcakes

Brownies weren't my alone contribution to the tea party. This party's premise was the 30th birthday of a rather keen lady, together with I felt compelled to scroll through my Dessert bookmarks for to a greater extent than inspiration. Red velvet cupcakes caught my eye. This version comes from Simply Recipes together with is written past times cupcake creative Garrett McCord - I'm a regular together with admiring reader of his other nutrient blog, Vanilla Garlic.

together with I felt compelled to scroll through my Dessert bookmarks for to a greater extent than inspiration May 1-2, 2009: Red velvet cupcakesThe 'red' inwards 'red velvet' doesn't come upward from raspberries, beetroot or whatever other produce; it's the biggest dose of ruby-red nutrient colouring yous mightiness e'er ingest inwards a sitting. The cake besides includes a lilliputian cocoa but doesn't convey a rigid chocolate season at all. These proved to locomote pleasant together with mild; it's their looks that are to a greater extent than memorable.

together with I felt compelled to scroll through my Dessert bookmarks for to a greater extent than inspiration May 1-2, 2009: Red velvet cupcakesBut, oh - the icing! Red velvet cake is iced non amongst traditional buttercream but amongst a cream cheese-based version. And it was the lightest, smoothest spoonful of sky I may e'er convey tasted. It seems probable that I volition never bother amongst buttercream in ane lawsuit to a greater extent than (though ganache volition in all likelihood even thence instruct a guernsey at other times together with places). Not ane for piping, I slathered it onto the cupcakes amongst a teaspoon together with rather liked the effect.

together with I felt compelled to scroll through my Dessert bookmarks for to a greater extent than inspiration May 1-2, 2009: Red velvet cupcakesGarrett's recipe is a fabulous rendition of a southern U.S. of A. favourite. The cake has a lovely texture, but I reckon it's the icing that's the absolute keeper - I'm looking forwards to teaming it amongst other flavours.

Red velvet cupcakes amongst cream cheese icing
(a halved, metric-fied, together with Aussie-spelled version of Garrett McCord's recipe at Simply Recipes)

cake:
3/4 loving cup sugar
60g butter, softened
1 egg
1 1/6 cups evidently flour
1 tablespoon cocoa
1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 loving cup buttermilk
3/4 tablespoon ruby-red nutrient colouring
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon white vinegar

icing:
60g butter, softened
120g cream cheese, softened
1 - 1 1/2 cups icing sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Set 10-12 cupcake papers into a cupcake baking tray.

Cream together the butter together with carbohydrate until lite together with fluffy. (I had existent problem amongst this! Most probable because my butter hadn't softened enough.) Beat inwards the egg thoroughly.

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa, bicarb soda, baking pulverization together with salt. In a 2nd smaller bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vinegar, vanilla together with ruby-red nutrient colouring.

Gradually together with alternately musical rhythm out the flour together with buttermilk mixtures into the sugar/butter/egg mixture, until the cake batter is polish together with homogeneous.

Spoon the batter into the lined cupcake tray, filling each loving cup close two-thirds full. Bake for 18-22 minutes, checking them amongst a skewer. Allow the cakes to cool earlier icing them.

For the icing, cream together the butter together with cheese, thence musical rhythm out inwards the vanilla. Gradually musical rhythm out inwards the icing carbohydrate until the sweetness is to your sense of savour (I works life that 1 loving cup of icing carbohydrate was exactly right). Slather the icing onto the cupcakes.
