Zucchini Falafel

August 23, 2012

Cindy too I typically figure out our dinner plans each morn earlier work, based on a combination of what's inward the refrigerator too what nosotros experience like. Every 2nd Th we're presented amongst a dilemma - nosotros know we've got a veggie box coming but we've got no stance what volition hold upward inward it. The website has a oil listing each calendar week but things don't ever check up. This calendar week nosotros decided that we'd destination upward amongst at to the lowest degree 1 zucchini too went hunting for roughly form of zucchini based dish to base of operations our dinner around.

This recipe for zucchini falafel from standard recipes. They're almost fritters rather than falafel really, although they however combined deliciously amongst Cindy's yoghurt/tahini/lemon juice sauce. We merely chucked ours on move past times of roughly greens too grated carrot, but these would operate merely too inward a roll or burger.

Zucchini falafel

(based on a recipe from Cook (almost) Anything at Least Once)

220g zucchini, roughly grated

1 x 400g chickpeas, drained too rinsed

ii pocket-size chocolate-brown onions, peeled too roughly chopped

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon cumin

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1 egg, lightly whisked

3/4 loving cup parsley leaves

1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs

Oil

Whiz the onions, paprika, cumin too baking pulverization inward a nutrient processor, until the onion is finely chopped too everything is combined.

Add the chickpeas too zucchini too pulse roughly to a greater extent than - you'll quest to scrape the sides downward a chip to brand certain everything gets properly sliced up. Add inward the parsley too whiz again.

Scoop all the mixture out into a mixing bowl too stir through the egg. Add inward nearly 3/4 loving cup of breadcrumbs, until the mix has dried out plenty to hold upward manageable.

Heat a decent layer of oil inward a frying pan - you lot desire to larn it pretty hot.

Pop the balance of the breadcrumbs inward a pocket-size bowl. Roll the falafel mixture into golf-ball sized spheres, scroll them through the breadcrumbs to coat too driblet them into the hot oil. Fry for iv or v minutes on each side, soak off roughly of the oil on a newspaper towel too serve.

This makes nearly xx balls, which comfortably left us amongst lunch-sized leftovers for the side past times side day.

June 27, 2008: London

On Fri morn nosotros had intended to teach going early on as well as breakfast at the Borough Market. However, events conspired against us. First, nosotros discovered that on Fridays the markets don't opened upwards until noon. No problem; instead nosotros shared a still-warm baguette breakfast (fresh from the bakery, smothered inwards butter as well as Vegemite) alongside Emily as well as Sam, too savouring a terminal chat earlier nosotros moved on. Plan B was to halt past times the cashew crack

Buttons recommending them. I recall I involuntarily swore the outset 2nd I tasted one, they are therefore darn good. Like those raspberry jube lollies but genuinely fruit! How tin displace such a wondrous affair exist? How are they bred? What does a fresh i await like? Where tin displace I teach to a greater extent than or less to a greater extent than correct NOW?!

the Gate Vegetarian Restaurant. Even better, nosotros were coming together Krusty as well as Jason there! They were our regular dining companions inwards our outset half-dozen months of living inwards Melbourne, introducing us to the likes of Polly, the Vegie Bar as well as Shakahari. Since therefore they've been living as well as working inwards Colchester, the side past times side halt on our Great Britain tour.

The Gate is pricey, though it may but last the telephone commutation charge per unit of measurement that puts it beyond Shakahari for us. It offers a similar grade of carefully composed meals alongside a seasonal rotation inwards a sophisticated but non over-the-top environment.

On Fri morn nosotros had intended to teach going early on as well as breakfast at the Borough Market June 27, 2008: London

Usually alone i or ii items volition outflow out at me from a listing of starters (i.e. whatever's deep fried) but hither I was genuinely stumped - how could I alternative between, say, the courgette bloom as well as the 3 onion tart? What near the haloumi kibi or the Indo-Iraqi tater cake? We were all able to sample most of the starter carte du jour when nosotros agreed to percentage a large mezze platter. Clockwise from the top, nosotros had:

Caesar salad, alongside capers, olives, garlic croutons, avocado as well as cherry tomatoes, parmesan as well as a Caesar dressing;
broadbean falafel alongside babaganoush, carmine schoog, pickled vegetables as well as pita bread;
a mustard seed tater cake filled alongside Indian spiced vegetables, pan-fried as well as served alongside mango yoghurt as well as a sugariness as well as sour tamarind sauce;
leeks as well as shallots baked alongside creme fraiche inwards a parmesan pastry, topped alongside caramelised carmine onions as well as basil oil;
char-grilled haloumi inwards a tikka marinade skewered alongside carmine onions, capsicum as well as zucchini, served alongside a pomegranate, herb as well as cous-cous salad; and
a salad of caramelised quince, roasted walnuts as well as crumbled stilton tossed alongside mixed salad leaves inwards a walnut vinigarette.

Wow. If you're afterwards bear witness of the line of our friendship alongside Krusty as well as Jason, it's that nosotros all faithfully restricted ourselves to a quarter of each special earlier rotating the plate as well as continuing. But it was hard.

The other 3 were all taken past times the tortillas for their primary course. The wheat tortillas are filled alongside sugariness potato, sugariness corn, goat's cheese, coriander as well as chilli, therefore served alongside guacamole, sour cream as well as a dark edible bean as well as carmine capsicum salsa.

In a bid to last different, Michael changed his lodge to the risotto, alongside roasted butternut squash, dolcelatte as well as thyme, finished alongside walnuts as well as fresh parmesan.

I reckon I got the best bargain of the lot. This is the Rotolo - mushroom duxelles as well as goat's cheese rolled inwards a thyme-infused potato, served on a bed of French beans alongside a white wine, cream as well as cep reduction, topped alongside deep-fried leeks. Rich French nutrient is non beyond the grasp of the vegetarian (nor the vegan, past times the looks of this!). I volition dream near that sauce for years to come, I'm certain of it.

For dessert, nosotros had the chance to percentage as well as sample in i lawsuit to a greater extent than alongside the mezze of desserts. Sadly the low-cal was waning as well as my photograph doesn't produce this justice. Hopefully you lot tin displace brand out (clockwise from top):

hazelnut creme brulee,
pressed chocolate as well as chestnut torte,
cappuccino as well as vanilla cheesecake
rhubarb, pear as well as ginger crumble (centre), and
apple tree pie.

I conduct maintain never genuinely 'got' creme brulee, but dang, instantly I do. With therefore much rich nutrient inwards our stomachs, I don't know how nosotros managed to trim down it to this:

But nosotros did.

Green Man's Arms Ii

March 19, 2018

New-ish vegetarian pub Green Man's Arms proved a bang-up location for a quick, early on dinner earlier nosotros striking the inexpensive movies at our terminal visit! It's to a greater extent than clearly divided into sharing dishes, meals for one, sides in addition to sweets... fifty-fifty amongst this guidance Michael couldn't assist over-ordering.

Importantly, the pommes frites ($8.50) are even thence acquaint in addition to even thence fantastic.

The falafel at in i lawsuit cast utilisation of a mezze plate ($19.50), along amongst 3 dips (hummus, beetroot, in addition to spicy capsicum), apartment staff of life in addition to pickles.

H5N1 novel offering is mac & cheese ($17.50) - it's plenty cheesy yet non too heavy, spliced amongst zucchini ribbons topped amongst lots of fresh dark-green herbs.

We didn't arrive through all of this food, but I've got my oculus on plenty to a greater extent than besides: Yemeni luhuh stuffed amongst tempura sugariness potato, pate, a mushroom burger amongst those killer pommes frites in addition to a watermelon 'tuna' salad. I promise this bill of fare sticks closed to long plenty to allow me the opportunity.

Maha

May 25, 2012

Marieke has repeatedly recommended Maha for vego fine dining, in addition to Michael decided to accept her advice piece celebrating his birthday this year. While the eating theatre is large, its nighttime furnishings in addition to loud-ish music lend quite the urban center bar feel.

I took this equally a cue to social club a cocktail - our waiter suggested the pomegranate sour ($19) in addition to I'm in addition to thence glad he did. The egg white froth topping the sweetness in addition to sour liquor tasted similar icecream - this is ane grown-up spider.

The card is inspired past times the Middle East (though you'll for certain run into around contemporary tweaks inward the dishes nosotros ate) in addition to comes inward a gain of styles in addition to sizes - the soufra (in 2, three or iv courses) looks to a greater extent than traditional, piece the sultans is an extravagant vi or 8 courses. You tin also become a la carte, picking featured items from the other menu. Maha impress out a split vegetarian card specially, in addition to the staff explicitly asked close dietary requirements twice in addition to thence other restricted eaters should live good catered to, too.

Michael had us all ordering the 8 course of study blow-out, though nosotros held off on the matched wine. The repast begins amongst shot-sized spectacles of an iced hibiscus tea.

And bread. Soft, warm, fancy bread. These ones were most notable for their sweetness - I mean value the circular ane was lightly spiced amongst cinnamon.

Our origin proper course of study was a carrot in addition to cumin shourba amongst carrot cous cous. The soup was surprisingly thick in addition to I couldn't gustatory modality much beyond the cumin, which disappointed me.

This medley of breakfast radish, micro carrot, pickled cabbage, mushroom dirt, leaves in addition to saffron yoghurt was pleasant, though I didn't actually instruct the hang of how these ingredients fit together. Mostly I was merely distracted past times the cabbage's resemblance to raw meat.

I got to a greater extent than into the swing of the seeds, nuts, peas, turnips in addition to beans, swiping inward the roast lemon gel in addition to crunching on the goats curd cigar.

The side past times side dish had a similar presentation in addition to was merely equally likeable - BBQ corn kernels instruct a trivial mash from puffed corn, around depth from smoked almonds, in addition to extra wet from a corn custard. Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 silverbeet borek on overstep adds the extra salty-friedness that I can't resist.

Course reveal 5 featured heirloom tomatoes in addition to broken coriander falafel amongst around unexpected kewpie mayo in addition to toast foam. Though it paired good amongst the tomatoes, nosotros industrial plant life the toast foam a trivial pretentious - hummus would serve the same purpose! - in addition to thence much in addition to thence that nosotros barely noticed that kewpie mayo anomaly.

Thankfully at that topographic point was a longer interruption earlier the terminal savoury dishes arrived, though nosotros however had no promise of finishing them. The highlight was a stuffed kousa (zucchini) bloom - instead of the stock-standard creamy cheese filling, this ane boasted sweetly spiced pumpkin, a surprisingly apt match. I was less enamoured of the mograbiehi - they were chewy, heavy in addition to non total of flavour.

Besides, at that topographic point were fifty-fifty to a greater extent than carbohydrates on offer, in addition to few compete for my attentions quite similar potatoes!

We were also served a fattoush, which was lovely but alone served to triple the carb load.

Dessert was non much lighter - our origin was a loving cup lined amongst baklava crumbs containing peanut butter parfait, salted caramel, chocolate sorbet in addition to orangish blossom foam. The subtleties of the orangish in addition to baklava were lost on me but equally a card-carrying supporter of all things chocolate-and-peanut-butter, I was happy.

Our lastly dish was non diminutive, either - nosotros were served towering pots of white chocolate soufflé amongst rosemary H2O ice cream in addition to bluish berry meringues. While the meringues didn't produce much for me, the honeyed flavor of the soufflé paired amongst the rosemary H2O ice cream was striking; ane time I'd eaten all the H2O ice cream I lost involvement inward the remaining tertiary of my soufflé.

As nosotros settled the pecker in addition to retrieved our coats, nosotros were left amongst ii parting gifts - vials of ras el hanout in addition to DIY packages of Maha's famous Turkish Delight donuts, no longer on the menu.

It was a mixed repast - around of the flavor combinations were remarkable, piece others left me completely indifferent. But nosotros were all resoundingly full! I liked that the service was to a greater extent than casual than at many other high-end restaurants; it felt friendlier in addition to was however sufficiently attentive. (Even so, I'd prefer that they didn't assume the meat repast at our tabular array must live for ane of the males in addition to declare that the DIY donut packages were 'for the women'. SMASH THE GENDER BINARY, MAHA.)

Moreover, it's nifty to notch upwardly around other high-end venue that gladly caters to vegos. Though we're unlikely to notice the correct excuse to furnish soon, I suspect their soufra card would live nifty fun to portion amongst friends.
